Laparoscopic (Keyhole) Surgery

This operation involves performing the operation through 5 small incisions (5-15mm) through which a specialised camera and instruments are passed. The advantages over open surgery are:

  • Better magnification and visualisation of the prostate for the surgeon

  • Reduced blood loss

  • Reduced discomfort after the operation

  • Reduced pain medication

  • Lower rate of strictures

  • Shorter hospital stay

  • Faster return to normal activities

The robot, whilst technologically impressive, offers the same outcome as laparoscopic surgery, but is significantly more expensive option.  In other words, the advantages to the patient of robotic prostate surgery are the same as if it were a normal laparoscopic operation. They are:
